HONG KONG - Hong Kong people have given the thumbs-up to the three-day inspection trip to the HKSAR by the nation’s top legislator Zhang Dejiang -- the first visit to the city by a top State leader in four years.

Zhang Xiaoming, director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR, said the visit by Zhang Dejiang, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, shows the central government’s care for Hong Kong, as well as its sincerity to firmly uphold “One Country, Two Systems”, cheering up Hong Kong people for a brighter future.

He reiterated the central government’s firm stance on the country’s sovereignty over HKSAR and warned Hong Kong people against the motives of separatists under the guise of “localism”.

He quoted top legislator Zhang Dejiang as saying he hoped Hong Kong people can comprehend their love for the motherland and national identity. The top legislator also believes that Hong Kong people do not and will not support any form of so-called “independence” for Hong Kong.

Zhang Xiaoming said the State leader’s remarks are to remind Hong Kong people to stick to the “One Country, Two Systems” principle with the hope that the SAR can seize the opportunities offered by the nation's development strategies and that people from all sectors of the Hong Kong community should work together for a better future.

In an article published in a local newspaper, Legislative Council President Jasper Tsang Yok-sing described Zhang’s visit as inspiring as it reaffirmed the central government’s confidence in Hong Kong’s future and “One Country, Two Systems”.

He believes that the confidence derives from the fact that the central government knows fairly well about Hong Kong’s real situation and the issues and challenges it’s facing.

Former Secretary for Security and now chairwoman of the New People’s Party Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee called Zhang’s remarks “unprecedented and meaningful” as they reaffirmed the central government’s firm stance on “One Country, Two Systems” and assured that Hong Kong will not become just like another mainland city.

She said it’s a message aimed at promoting social harmony in Hong King, and warned that attempts to achieve so-called “self-determination” for Hong Kong will only drive away investors.

In an editorial on the visit, local Chinese-language newspaper Wen Wei Po said Zhang had brought a clear message to Hong Kong -- the central government’s policy on Hong Kong affairs and that its support for the SAR has not and will not change. It urged Hong Kong people to see clearly the problems they are facing and shift their focus back to economic and social development.
