Festivals get UNESCO nod
UNESCO decided Wednesday to add the group of 33 “Yama, Hoko, Yatai, float festivals” to its intangible cultural heritage list. One of the 33 is the Furukawa Festival, and related people can be seen shouting with joy in the picture above upon hearing the news Thursday in Hida, Gifu Prefecture. TOKYO - The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization decided on Wednesday to add the group of 33 "Yama, Hoko, Yatai, float festivals" to its intangible cultural heritage list.

One of the 33 to be added to the group is the Furukawa Festival, and related people can be seen shouting with joy in the picture above upon hearing the news Thursday in Hida, Gifu Prefecture. Many of the designated festivals are said to have started in the Edo period (1603-1867).
