An artisan puts the finishing touches on a replica of a wagasa Japanese umbrella that was once owned by surrealist master Salvador Dali (1904-1989). Kyoto umbrella maker Hiyoshiya Co was asked by the Gala-Salvador Dali Foundation in Spain to reproduce the wagasa – 2.7 meters in diameter, with its handle extending 1.65 meters – which was deteriorating. The replica will be returned to the foundation before the July 1 opening of the “Salvador Dali” exhibition, organized by The Yomiuri Shimbun, at the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art.
