Small mushrooms emit a greenish colour at night in the forest of the Rokko mountain range in Kita Ward, Kobe. These shiinotomoshibitake mushrooms grow to about 3 centimetres tall, with caps measuring about 1 to 2 centimetres in diameter. They grow on the trunks and hollows of rotten deciduous trees and open their caps during the rainy season. Like fireflies, they produce light when a luminous substance within them reacts with oxygen.
