Dozens found dead in truck in Austria

By Xinhua

VIENNA - Dozens of refugees were found dead in a truck just outside of Vienna in eastern Austria, police said on Thursday.

Burgenland police told Xinhua that all the people were dead when being found in the vehicle parked at the parking strip of a highway near the small town Pandorf of Austrian eastern state Burgenland.

The exact number of deaths was not established yet and was estimated to be around 20-50, according to the police. The vehicle carried Hungarian license plates and the police are still looking for the driver.

Janos Lazar, chief of the Hungarian Prime Minister's Office, said that the plates had been issued in the city of Kecskemet, about 85 km from Budapest, to an unnamed Romanian national.

Lazar added Hungarian police were working with their Austrian counterparts to discover how this horrific incident could occur and to apprehend those responsible.

The victims were migrants trying to travel to Western Europe through Hungary.

"This exceptional occurrence demonstrates how the immigration situation has deteriorated in recent weeks," Lazar said.

At a press conference in Eisenstadt, the capital of Burgenland, police said the bodies appeared to be partially decomposed, indicating the people in the truck had been dead for some time.
