BEIJING - Vietnam is taking "dangerous actions" at sea, China said on Tuesday, after a Vietnamese fishing boat sunk in the South China Sea on a day China's Vice Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin said China will continue to promote peaceful settlement of disputes through negotiation with the countries concerned.

He added that no country should doubt China's determination and will to safeguard the peace and stability of the South China Sea. Liu's remarks came amid rising tensions between China and Vietnam over territorial disputes in the South China Sea.

"China is devoted to continuing to promote peaceful settlement of disputes through negotiations by countries directly concerned, as well as to promoting common development until we can find solutions to the disputes," Liu told reporters on the sidelines of a colloquium in Beijing commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Five Principles of Peaceful Co-existence.

"Being the lifeline for China at sea, the South China Sea is far more important to China than to other countries," Liu said.

China also urged Vietnam to immediately stop all disruptive and damaging activities at sea. Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang made the remarks at a regular briefing.

A Vietnamese fishing boat capsized after harassing and colliding with a Chinese fishing boat in the South China Sea at around 5 pm Monday, a source with the Chinese government said on Tuesday.

Crew on board the boat were saved after their ship jostled a fishing boat from Dongfang City in southern China's Hainan Province and overturned in the waters near China's Xisha Islands, according to the source.

Vietnam has sent a number of ships to obstruct the drilling of Chinese companies in the waters where the collision took place. The Chinese side has taken measures to stop Vietnamese interference and lodged serious representations to the Vietnamese side, asking them to immediately stop the disruptive activities, according to the source.
