Indians vote in final phase of marathon polls

NEW DELHI - Indians on Wednesday morning started voting in the eighth phase of the marathon general election in 64 Lok Sabha constituencies in seven states across the country.

This phase of polling is considered crucial for the incumbent Congress as it now was holding nearly half of the 64 parliamentary seats contested today.

The past week saw fierce attacks and counter-attacks between the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), whose prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi focused on the Gandhi family.

Modi campaigned in Amethi in Uttar Pradesh where Congress vice- president Rahul Gandhi is contesting.

Modi raised the issue of religion and caste by for the first time invoking Lord Ram as well as his backward caste status. He also held up a lotus sign of Hinduism during voting in his home state Gujarat last week.

The BJP has to do well in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar to be in the reckoning as the single largest party in the new Lok Sabha, or lower house of parliament, said local daily The Hindu.

Voting will take place in seven Lok Sabha constituencies in Bihar, 15 in Uttar Pradesh, six in West Bengal, five in Uttarakhand, four in Himachal Pradesh and two in Indian-controlled Kashmir, as well as two seats in Himachal Pradesh.
