ZHENGZHOU - Search and rescue work ended early Saturday morning on a collapsed building in central China's Henan province where 17 workers died, with several people responsible now in police custody, authorities said Saturday.
The two-storey house, which was built in the 1990s in Beiwudu town, Wuyang county, suddenly collapsed at around 3:30 pm on Friday when construction workers were attempting to lift its foundation, according to the county publicity department.
Rescuers pulled out 40 workers from the debris as of 10:50 pm Friday. Seventeen died and 23 others were injured, with nine in a serious condition.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
