HK sees Golden Week visitor numbers edge higher

The number of visitors to Hong Kong from the Chinese mainland increased 3.8 percent to 490,273 during the May Day Golden Week from April 29 to May 1, compared with the same period last year, according to the Hong Kong Immigration Department.

The city had seen a 7-percent jump in the number of mainland visitors last year. Moreover, the first day of the holiday break this year recorded 197,486 mainland visitors, while 202,000 arrived last year.

Separately, flight data from mainland online travel agency Qunar.com showed Hong Kong’s ranking as the most popular outbound travel destination jumped from sixth place last year to second this year, behind Bangkok, capital of Thailand.

Online cross-border payment systems aredeveloping rapidly in Hong Kong and many local retailers actively utilize theseto attract customers. WeChat Paydata showed Hong Kong overtook South Korea as the area with the most cross-border payments during the three-day holiday.

Meanwhile, China National Tourism Administration announced on Monday that the number of tourists the mainland received surged 14.4 percent to 134 million during the holiday, bringing 79.1 billion yuan (US$11.5 billion) in revenue.
