HONG KONG - A new trans-Pacific cable between Hong Kong and Los Angeles will increase the city's telecommunications capacity by 120 terabits per second, said Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying on Wednesday.

The cable, built by Google and Facebook, will have a capacity for Hong Kong to run 80 million simultaneous high-definition video calls with Los Angeles, said Leung at the Internet Economy Summit.

The cable will put Hong Kong in a good position to become Asia's data hub, Leung added.

"As a matter of fact, many global data center providers already, or have plans to, set up cloud computing facilities here," Leung said.

The CE also hailed the SAR's information communications technology as "world class".

Hong Kong's telecommunications network is connected by 10 regional and trans-Pacific submarine cable systems, as well as 10 satellites for external communications, amounting to 45 terabits per second in capacity.
