CE expresses confidence in Carrie Lam

HONG KONG - Chief Executive (CE) Leung Chun-ying has expressed confidence in his former Chief Secretary Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor . The CE describes Lam as capable and as someonw with the experience of dealing with Hong Kong’s long-term problems and difficulties.

Leung made the remarks prior to the Executive Council meeting on Tuesday, when asked to comment on those aspiring to be the next CE , to be elected March 26.

Leung said no matter who leads the next SAR government, the candidate should respond to the demands of society which include helping the poor, caring for the elderly and most importantly, addressing housing issues.

Looking back, Leung said, his government had achieved some progress in all the areas he mentioned. He also noted that his government had substantially increased its expenditure on social welfare - by 55 percent - since he assumed office.

Society’s expectation that the government will continue to work on those issues had not changed much, Leung said. He said he expected the next chief executive to lead the government in continuign with such efforts.

He said what would distinguish the candidates for the CE's post would be their commitment to social welfare and their willingness to work hard to achieve the necessary goals.

Lam announced her bid to join the race on Monday, promising good governance with new visions for Hong Kong. She joins veteran lawmaker Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee and retired judge Woo Kwok-hing in the lineup of contenders. Financial secretary John Tsang Chun-wah is expected to announce his candidature in the coming days.
