HONG KONG --  A 62-year-old man who contracted the H7N9 bird flu — the third case of this human bird flu strain in the city this winter — died Friday morning.

The city's second case of H7N9 was confirmed last Friday. The 70-year-old patient is currently in serious condition.

A total of 19 people have been infected with bird flu in China so far this winter, all with the H7N9 strain, killing at least three

The first patient, a 75-year-old man, died from the disease on Dec 25 last year.

The latest case came as fears grow over the spread of bird flu in South Korea, Japan and the Chinese mainland.

A total of 19 people have been infected with bird flu on the mainland so far this winter, all with the H7N9 strain, killing at least three.

Hong Kong's Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health said a 62-year-old man had travelled to Guangzhou in mid-December, was in hospital in nearby Dongguan on Monday and Tuesday.

He discharged himself and was admitted to hospital in Hong Kong on Wednesday in critical condition, it said.
