Hong Kong legislator and Chairwoman of the New People's Party Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee announced she will run for the city's Chief Executive next March after a special party meeting on Wednesday evening.

She will resign from the Executive Council and announce her political platform on Thursday.

According to Ip, 66, the party delegates voted unanimously for her decision.

Speaking to the media, Ip expressed her confidence in running for CE due to her work during recent years.

Born to a businessman's family, Ip pursued her education both in Hong Kong and Britain.

Ip joined the Hong Kong government in the 1970s and became the first woman to be appointed as secretary for security, the post which heads the disciplinary service in Hong Kong.

During her time in office, Ip promoted the national security legislation on Article 23 of Hong Kong's Basic Law in 2003. However she faced a massive protest and the government withdrew the proposed legislation. Ip resigned from office afterward, citing personal reasons.

In the Legislative Council election this September, Ip was re-elected in the Hong Kong Island geographical constituency. She was the lawmaker with the most votes – more than 60,000, accounting for 16 percent of the total.
