Tommy Cheung, Martin Liao appointed to ExCo

The Non-official Members of the Executive Council (ExCo Members) visited Hong Kong's first sludge treatment facility, T·PARK, in Tuen Mun on Nov 11, 2016.

HONG KONG -- Liberal Party chairman Tommy Cheung and a legal expert on Friday were appointed members of the Executive Council (ExCo), the highest policy-making body in the city's government.

The Chief Executive, Leung Chun-ying , announced the appointment of Cheung and Martin Liao to the ExCo , with immediate effect.

Leung said Cheung and Liao have rich experience in the Legislative Council (LegCo) and public service, and have made significant contributions to their respective sectors.

"I am confident that they will offer valuable advice and effectively fulfil the role of assisting policymaking after joining ExCo," he said.

Cheung, aged 67, is currently a LegCo member, chairman of the Liberal Party, member of the Housing Authority and council member of the Chinese University of Hong Kong as well as the chairman of the Hong Kong Catering Industry Association and honorary life president of the Association of Restaurant Managers. Cheung was awarded the Gold Bauhinia Star in 2015.

Liao, aged 59, is currently a LegCo member, deputy to the National People's Congress and chairman of the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorist Financing (Financial Institutions) Review Tribunal. He used to serve as a temporary judge of the District Court of Hong Kong, chairman of the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications, council member of the Hong Kong Bar Association, member of the Copyright Tribunal and part-time member of the Central Policy Unit. Liao was awarded the Silver Bauhinia Star in 2014.
