LegCo returns to normal after HC ruling

By Shadow Li

HONG KONG - The Legislative Council's weekly assembly on Wednesday resumed operations for the first time without disruption since members of the sixth LegCo were sworn in on Oct 12.

Previous meetings over the past month have been disrupted in the aftermath of the oath-taking fiasco involving two separatist former lawmakers-elect who hurled insults at the nation and presented banners advocating their separatist agenda during the solemn swearing-in session on Oct 12.

The pair, Sixtus Baggio Leung Chung-hang and Yau Wai-ching, was disqualified from office by the High Court on Tuesday, with their seats deemed vacated on Oct 12.

LegCo meetings were forced to be adjourned three times in the past month. Last week’s meeting came precariously close to an adjournment before a change in venue facilitated resumption of normal operations.

Leung and Yau are expected to file an appeal today to challenge the High Court’s decision.
