DBC licence termination approved

By GIS

HONG KONG - The Chief Executive in Council has approved the termination of Digital Broadcasting Corporation's licence from Oct 15.

The company wrote to the Secretary for Commerce & Economic Development on Aug 8 to surrender of its sound broadcasting licence, saying it has no prospect of making its business model commercially viable.

Approval has also been given to the revision of the licence fee for 2016-17. It will be charged on the basis of recovery of costs and expenses incurred by the Office of the Communications Authority in administering the licence for the period from the start of the licence year (Aug 15) to the revised end date of the licence (Oct 14) which amounts to $758,365.

The Communications Authority said there are no outstanding obligations and liabilities accrued under the licence.

The review on the future of digital audio broadcasting services in Hong Kong is underway.
