Nomination for Election Committee election begins Nov 8

HONG KONG – Nomination for the election of the 1,200-strong Election Committee (EC) will be started from Nov 8 to 14, the Registration and Electoral Office (REO) announced on Friday.

Election day, which will see candidates from 38 subsectors contesting seats on the committee entitled to choose the city’s next top leader in March 2017, is set to be Dec 11.

The EC subsector elections will cover subsectors of different professions, labor units, social service organizations and the religious subsector.

"A nominee must be a registered geographical constituency elector aged 18 or above who is a registered voter for the relevant EC subsector or has a substantial connection with that subsector,” said a REO spokesman.

The spokesman also noted that the nomination form should be subscribed to by at least five registered voters for the EC subsector elections, and the nominee must submit the form in person within the nomination period with HK$1,000 as the election deposit.

Returning officers have been assigned by the Electoral Affairs Commission to receive nomination forms from different subsectors. Nomination forms are available at the district offices, the relevant returning officers’ offices and the offices of the REO.
