HONG KONG - The Hang Seng Management College has emphasized the crucial role of business journalism in the growth and sustainable development of the Hong Kong economy as its head of School of Communication briefed the press about its inaugural business journalism awards on Thursday.

As an international trade and financial center, the business community and the general public in Hong Kong rely on accurate business and financial news as well as in-depth analyses to made sound judgment and investment decisions, according to Professor Scarlet Tso, Dean of School of Communication.

Therefore, the School has launched the HSMC Business Journalism Awards -- the first of its kind initiated by a local tertiary institution -- to recognize professional journalists who have produced outstanding reporting in business, economic and financial issues, Tso said.

The awards comprise seven categories, including Best Business and Corporate News Reporting, Best Financial Feature, and Business Reporter of the Year.

Also at the press conference, the HSMC President Simon Ho has underlined the college's goal to nurture young people with independent thinking, innovation and a caring mind, instead of just to prepare them for a job after graduation.

Ho added the college is on track with its plan to submit an application to the government for a university title in 2017. The results will be announced the year after.
