Woman dies after being hit by bus

HONG KONG – A 26-year-old woman died after being knocked down on the pavement by a runaway double-deck bus in Tsim Sha Tsui on Thursday morning.

The tragedy took place at around 6 am when a Kowloon Motor Bus vehicle driven by a 40-year-old man suddenly crushed into a pedestrian area next to Nathan Road.

It left some metal railings and water-filled barriers on the sidewalk broken.

The victim was believed to be waiting to cross the road when the incident happened. She was trapped under the vehicle.

The woman lost consciousness before being sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where she was certified dead around 7 am.

The bus driver was also sent to hospital as he claimed to feel unwell. He was arrested over suspected dangerous driving causing death.

"Initial information has shown that the driver was unconscious when the accident happened,” Yung Pak-kuen, senior inspector from the Special Investigation Team of Traffic, Kowloon West, told the media.

"The relevant information, however, needs to be reconfirmed.”

The driver passed the drink-driving test, he further revealed.

It is still unknown what caused the accident, but Yung said the police will investigate the physical condition of the driver, the mechanical condition of the bus, and other possible causes that might have affected the driving.

He has also appealed to any witnesses of the accident to contact the police for further investigation.
