Special traffic arrangements planned for National Day


Police will impose special traffic controls and strengthen inspections of spectator vessels on Oct 1 during the National Day fireworks display, police confirmed on Tuesday.

More than 275,000 people are expected to watch the fireworks at Victoria Habour starting from 9 pm.

Police said traffic diversions on Hong Kong Island will be implemented in phases from 7:30 pm at Wan Chai and from 8 pm at Central. In Kowloon, such arrangements will be implemented in phases from 7 pm at Tsim Sha Tsui.

Marine police will set up restricted areas in waters on Oct 1. No vessels are will be allowed to enter Victoria Harbour unless authorized to.

About 300 maritime officers will be deployed to see all sightseeing ferries have adequate life jackets, and full passenger and crew lists on board. The move was to prevent marine accidents.

The Maritime Department will also deploy 20 patrol launches and another 120 personnel to patrol the harbor and nearby waters.

On Oct 1, 2012, passenger ferries Sea Smooth and Lamma IV collided off Yung Shue Wan, Lamma Island, killing 39 and injuring 92. The incident was the deadliest maritime disaster in Hong Kong since 1971.

In case of traffic congestion, motorists should avoid driving to the affected areas, exercise patience, and follow the instructions of police, advised Police Superintendent for Traffic Control Chu Ki-kin.

People who plan to go to watch the celebrations should use public transport, he added.

Some 23,000 fireworks will explode over Victoria Harbour; eight different scenes are planned.

One will feature kung fu: Fireworks will explode while kung fu stars will perform. There will also be fireworks resembling jellyfish and different marine animals.
