HONG KONG - "One Country, Two Systems" is the key framework that makes all Hong Kong's specialness possible and sustainable over time, said US Consul-General in Hong Kong and Macao Kurt Tong on Thursday in his first public speech since he assumed office a month ago.

It is crystal clear that Hong Kong is definitely part of China. "'One Country, Two Systems' has been highly successful in protecting Hong Kong's open society and institutions," Tong said in his address to members of the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong.

"Hong Kong's high degree of autonomy under 'One Country, Two Systems' is something that requires care and attention to maintain," Tong added.

On the Hong Kong-US relationship, Tong pointed out three challenges – maintaining economic competitiveness, combating a growing income disparity and providing opportunities for young people.

Hong Kong is the 10th-largest export market for the US and a key destination for American beef and wine products, despite Hong Kong's relatively small market, according to Tong.
