MTR extension line to open Oct 23

HONG KONG - Hong Kong's long-awaited Kwun Tong Line Extension will start service on Oct 23, the city's sole metro service provider MTR Corp (MTRC) announced on Wednesday.

The new extension connects Yau Ma Tei and Whampoa via Ho Man Tin with a total route length of approximately 2.6 km. The move puts two major residential areas in Kowloon on the city's MTR map.

MTRC will test the signal system and adjust train operations in the following month, according to Operations Director Adi Lau Tin-shing.

The new Ho Man Tin Station will also allow interchange between the Kwun Tong Line and the new Sha Tin-Central Link that is expected to kick off in 2019.

A trip from Whampoa to Admiralty will cost HK$11.9, the same as one from Mong Kok to Admiralty. Travelling from Whampoa to Yau Ma Tei will cost HK$4.5 while a trip from Whampoa to Tsim Sha Tsui will be HK$5.3, according to the company.

To attract passengers, the MTRC will offer transfer fare discounts to passengers from or to three green mini-bus lines in Ho Man Tin.
