HONG KONG - Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying on Tuesday met with visiting Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Hong Kong, encouraging more Canadian enterprises to establish a base in the SAR.

The two-day visit by the young Canadian leader is expected to boost the cooperation between the city and Canada to the next level, as his visit marked the day the Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement between both sides came into effect.

Hong Kong is home to the largest Canadian community in Asia, Leung noted, adding that a considerable number of Hong Kong immigrants also have residence in Canada.

Leung said that the two places have been enjoying close economic, trade, social and cultural ties during their long history of friendship.

The meeting was held in Government House on Tuesday afternoon after Trudeau, fresh from Hangzhou, Zhejiang province for the G20 Summit, attended a public gathering with the Canadian community in Hong Kong.

Leung expected that Hong Kong’s “super-connector” role between the Chinese mainland and the world under the nation’s Belt and Road Initiative could enhance and unlock more business opportunities between the SAR and Canada.
