Candidates from the city’s largest labor group – Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions (HKFTU) – gathered at Aberdeen in Southern District on Thursday and called on their supporters to cast their ballots in the upcoming Legislative Council election this Sunday.

The 38-year-old candidate Aron Kwok Wai-keung, who is contesting for a seat on Hong Kong Island, appealed to local voters to save him amid a "serious situation".

Kwok also hoped the city’s people would cast their votes for veteran lawmaker Wong Kwok-hing, who is seeking re-election to LegCo in the District Council (Second) functional constituency, saying that HKFTU will spare no effort to stop filibusters and enhance community services.

Local singer and actress Maria Cordero, famously known as “Fat Mama Maria”, criticized the filibustering tactics by the “pan-democratic” camp in the last LegCo term. She sought to convince voters that they have the power to drive radical lawmakers out of the legislature on election day by making "a right choice".

"Only by being elected into the LegCo can the unionists stop the filibusters. Otherwise major livelihood projects, including building more public rental houses, will continue to be delayed," she stressed.

"We should join hands and safeguard our city together,” she said. “Don’t vote for those who claim to be good but actually are not.”

Meanwhile, Kwok urged the MTR Corporation to speed up the construction of the South Island Line for completion as soon as possible.

"Unemployment of bus drivers due to the bus routes reorganization should also be avoided,” he added. “The island should make good use of the advantages of buses and mini-buses.”

Candidates running in the Hong Kong Island constituency are: Aron Kwok Wai-keung, Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee, Horace Cheung Kwok-kwan, Hui Chi-fung, Paul Zimmerman, Ricky Wong Wai-kay, Tanya Chan Suk-chong, Gary Wong Chi-him, Shum Chee-chiu, Law Kwun-chung, Cheng Kam-mun, Christopher Lau Gar-hung, Cyd Ho Sau-lan, Chui Chi-kin and Chim Pui-chung.

Candidates running in the District Council (Second) functional constituency are: Starry Lee Wai-king, Holden Chow Ho-ding, Wong Kwok-hing, Chan Yuen-sum, Leung Yiu-chung, James To Kun-sun, Kwong Chun-yu, Ho Kai-ming and Kwan Wing-yip.
