HONG KONG – A pipe receiving drinking water supply from the Guangdong's Dongjiang River burst between Fanling and Sheung Shui train stations on Thursday.

The Dongjiang River is the major single source of raw water for Hong Kong, according to Water Supplies Department (WSD).

Thousands of passengers remained stuck at Tai Wo, Fanling and Sheung Shui stations on the East Rail Line as the water flooded the rails and disabled part of the signal system.

The journey time between Hung Hom Station and Lo Wu Station or Lok Ma Chau Station was extended by 15 to 20 minutes, the train service provider MTR said in an announcement.

Train services were also rescheduled as that between Hung Hom and Tai Wo is running at 10-minute intervals, Tai Wo to Lo Wu at 15-minute intervals and Tai Wo to Lok Ma Chau at 25-minute intervals.

WSD said the leak point, which is underground, had already been spotted and repair work began.

The water supply was not affected since there are still other pipes transmitting Dongjiang River water, according to the department.

The annual Dongjiang water supply has been 70 to 80 percent of Hong Kong's total demand since 1990s.
