HONG KONG – Chinese Olympic Bronze medalist Fu Yuanhui will join the nation’s gold medalists on a visit to Hong Kong.

Fu, who finished third in the 100-meter backstroke at the Rio 2016 Olympics, is coming to the SAR following a popular demand, it was confirmed Tuesday.

The 20-year-old swimmer soared to instant popularity after she charmed millions around the world with her spontaneous, post-race interview at the games.

The delegation of the national team’s gold medalists is slated to give sport demonstrations during a three-day visit to Hong Kong – their first stop when they return home – from Saturday to Monday. Similar visits have been made since the 2000 Sydney Games.

Some 5,700 tickets for the sports demonstration by the national team sold out in just three hours on Monday. People queued up overnight to make sure they got their tickets.

Priced at HK$20 each, the tickets were quickly scalped at popular e-commerce site for up to 1,000 yuan (US$150, or HK$1,164) for the most popular sports such as table tennis and diving.

Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying will welcome Hong Kong’s returning Olympic athletes on Friday.

Speaking before attending an Executive Council meeting, the Chief Executive promised further efforts to beef up sports development.

He told reporters the government will review its support for sports development, especially its cooperation with schools to help to cultivate young and talented athletes.

Leung also lauded the performance of Hong Kong athletes at the Rio Olympics. Though they failed to win any medals, the CE commended their Hong Kong spirit and Olympic Spirit.
