New People’s Party fields 20 candidates for LegCo election

HONG KONG - New People’s Party on Friday announced it will dispatch 20 people in three candidate teams to battle for maybe the most unpredictable election in recent years.

In unveiling its candidacies for the coming Legislative Council election in September, New People’s Party Chairwoman Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee – also a veteran politician and former civil servant – said this year the party, which aims to win three seats in the next LegCo, will filed the election with young people.

The party currently holds two seats in the legislature, taken by Ip and the deputy chairman of the party Michael Tien Puk-sun. Both, partnered with young colleagues from the party, will be seeking a second term in September in Hong Kong Island and New Territories West, respectively. This year, seats in Hong Kong Island were cut from seven to six, making it more difficult for Ip to retain her current seat.

Apart from Ip and Tien, all the candidates from the party are aged below 40.

Programmer-turned-barrister Eunice Yung Hoi-yan, the party’s volunteer legal consultant, will contest in New Territories East.
