HONG KONG - A roadside memorial for senior station fire officer Thomas Cheung Yiu-sing was held on Monday near the industrial building where an inferno claimed his life. Some 300 people including Cheung’s family and relatives, colleagues, policemen and citizens attended the ceremony.

The killer blaze that started at around 11 am on June 21 at the Amoycan Industrial Center in Ngau Tau Kok lasted for 108 hours before being put out at night on June 25. Two firefighters, 30-year-old Cheung and 37-year-old fire service officer Samuel Hui Chi-kit, died battling the fire.

Cheung was found unconscious at the burning building at around 7 pm on June 21. He died at 9:54 pm on that day after being rushed to hospital. He is survived by his wife and a 4-month-old son.

Hui was found unconscious on the third floor of the burning building at around 7 pm on June 23. He died at United Christian Hospital in Kwun Tong two hours later, leaving a wife and a 7-year-old son.

Some 100 citizens standing on a footbridge over the site of the ceremony mourned Cheung on Monday. A banner hung on the bridge read “A salute to our respected fireman”.

Cheung’s friend surnamed Yu, who often played basketball with Cheung at a university campus, cried at the memorial. “Thomas was a very nice person. He was a good friend and a dedicated fireman,” Yu recalled. “I will do my best to help his family to get through the toughest time,” Yu added.

A female citizen surnamed Lee attended the memorial to pay her respects to Cheung. “Before this inferno, the public hardly noticed the fire hazards at mini-storage facilities. I hope the government can learn a lesson and take measures to minimize the damage and sacrifice,” she said.

A roadside memorial for Hui will be held on Tuesday.
