Father held after mother complains of child abuse

HONG KONG – The father of a nine-year-old girl, whose mother was forced to return to the mainland, has pleaded not guilty to 10 charges of child abuse. The charges include six counts of rape and four  of producing child pornography.

The girl was left in the sole care of her father after her mother was denied a Hong Kong visa for scavenging recyclables from an MTR station. The father’s name is withheld under a court imposed gag order to protect the victim.

The charges, read out in High Court Thursday, alleged the abuse took place over three years between 2011 and 2014 while the victim was between five and eight years old.

The problem came to light after the girl’s mother was allowed to return to Hong Kong in 2014. Police were called to investigate months later.

Prosecutors charge the child was molested daily, usually during the evening news broadcast and then again when she was asleep.

Photos of the alleged incidents were found on the man’s smart phone. In police interviews played back in court,  the girl described being denied food when she refused to cooperate with her father.
