2 Shue Yan student leaders among blast suspects

By Shadow Li /

HONG KONG - Two members elect of Hong Kong Shue Yan University’s students' union were found on Tuesday to be among the six men arrested the day before for a blast triggered in a trash bin outside the Legislative Council complex two weeks ago during a debate over the copyright bill.

No one was injured during the blast.

In a Facebook post around 3 am, the students' union confirmed the arrests of two of its members in connection with the dustbin blast. The duo are slated to assume their posts in January. The union said if the they are unable to do so by then, they will be replaced.

All six arrested persons were linked to some nativist organizations with an online presence. The suspects were identified as members of a “black bloc” as they favored all-black clothing and sported dark glasses and face masks to conceal their identities.

All six were charged with conspiracy to commit arson. The students' union pledged legal assistance for the members elect.

Police did not rule out more arrests.
