HK-Macao-Zhuhai bridge deadline extended

By Timothy Chui /

HONG KONG - Technical challenges in building one of the longest bridges ever conceived have pushed the tentative completion date of the Hong Kong to Macao and Zhuhai bridge to the end of 2017.

The one-year delay is the result of design and construction challenges as well as labor shortages and supply issues, the Highways Department said, describing the HK$133 billion 50-kilometer link as a huge and complicated assignment.

Construction of the network of bridges and tunnels began in 2009 and involves three cable-stayed bridges and two artificial islands as well as a 6.7 submerged section leading up to its entry point on Lantau Island. Following completion, car travel time to Zhuhai is expected to fall from nearly four hours to 30 minutes.
