HONG KONG - President Xi Jinping advised Hong Kong to plan ahead for the city's development in next decade as well as the city's position in the evolving global economy, said Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying after a meeting with the president.

The meeting took place at a hotel in Manila on the sidelines of the APEC leaders' summit on Wednesday.

Xi, according to Leung, said the central government fully recognized and supported efforts made by the SAR government to develop the city's economy and improve people's livelihoods.

The city chief was encouraged to make persistent efforts to promote Hong Kong’s development, and the central government will offer full support to the work of the SAR government, Leung said.

The president also advised the city administration to grasp opportunities arising from the "Belt and Road" initiatives and the nation's 13th Five-Year Plan.

The city was also cautioned about uncertainty in the global economy, in particular the impact of a likely interest rate hike, Leung quoted Xi as saying.

Leung said he had outlined to the president how Hong Kong's strengths – including English being used as an official language in Hong Kong -- may contribute to the "Belt and Road" initiatives.

Leung said, however, they had not touched on the World Cup qualifying match between the SAR and national teams that took place last evening.
