Hong Kong’s English proficiency slides

By Timothy Chui / chinadailyasia.com

HONG KONG - Hong Kong’s English proficiency continues to slide after the city ranked 33rd out of 77 surveyed countries according to a Swedish-based English training survey.

EF English First noted Hong Kong’s position slipped by two places since last year, continuing a four year slide in rankings with South Korea and Japan overtaking the city.

Mainland cities Shanghai and Beijing also scored higher than the former British colony.

Former Education Bureau political assistant Jeremy Young said an over emphasis on mother-tongue teachering had failed to foster a proper environment for those learning English as a second language.

Singapore was the top ranked Asian country, 12th overall and number one in the region.
