Protest over musical instrument ban

By China Daily

More than 2,500 netizens have responded to a Facebook page calling for a protest on Saturday at the MTR’s Tai Wai Station against the railway’s ban against big musical instruments.

Among online posts about people carrying instruments such as harps being intercepted by MTR staffers, Richard Bamping, principal cellist of the Hong Kong Philharmonic, said on a social website he was turned away from an MTR station. This was for carrying his cello, even though he offered to buy an extra ticket.

A spokesperson for the MTR Corporation said the rule banning luggage with total external measurements exceeding 160 centimeters was aimed at ensuring the comfort of passengers.
