Chinese top legislator Zhang Dejiang warned advocates of Hong Kong independence on Friday that they were "crossing a line".

Zhang, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), made the comment during a closed door meeting with Hong Kong deputies to the NPC. Zhang said that calls like advocating Hong Kong independence were "dangerous" and harm the city's stability, and would not be tolerated. Such calls also harm the country's sovereign and development interests.

The remarks come during the annual meeting in Beijing of the NPC.
