Mum eats own placenta after giving birth

By Timothy Chui /

HONG KONG - An American woman has become the first person to take her birth placenta home from a public hospital in Hong Kong.

Melissa Grenham took custody of her placenta from Queen Mary Hospital Wednesday after she was originally denied the right by the hospital on the grounds of public safety.

Grenham delivered on Aug 27 and had planned to convert the afterbirth into capsules for consumption.

Officials required Grenham to submit to a hepatitis C test and the placenta was released after results did not find any traces of the disease.

Medical practitioners are split on the practice of consuming afterbirth, known as placentophagy, which supporters say wards off post-pregnancy depression and boosts breast milk production.
