Hundreds of thousands of local residents and tourists were treated to festivities and fireworks marking 17 years since Hong Kong’s peaceful return to China.

More than 22 reunification celebration events were held throughout Hong Kong’s 18 districts to celebrate the 17th Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Establishment Day.  Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying launched the festivities with a flag-raising ceremony in Golden Bauhinia Square in the morning, attended by Zhang Xiaoming, director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR, and former chief executives Tung Chee-hwa and Donald Tsang Yam-kuen.

A police marching band played during a parade for the crowds who were also treated to a helicopter flyover and water cannon salute performed by fire-fighting boats. The stands at Southorn Playground in Wan Chai were packed with more than 700 locals entertained by various performance troupes under a blistering sun.  Sideshows and game stalls dotted the soccer pitch while volunteers from Hong Kong Wan Chai District Association circulated petitions against radical action which could harm Hong Kong’s commerce and reputation.

72-year-old Lee Che-cheung, added his name to a growing number of elderly citizens who remembered their lives in Hong Kong before the handover. Lee said his lot had improved in the 17 years since the handover and he was still enjoying his retirement 10 years on. He added that he was happy his now adult children had been able to study, marry and secure good jobs in the city they call home.
