Total 161 candidates are vying for 90 seats in the eighth-term Legislative Council General Election. The races have 51 candidates competing for 20 directly elected geographical seats, 60 vying for 30 functional constituency seats, and the remaining 50 contesting 40 Election Committee seats. Beginning at 7:30 am, voting will run till 11:30 pm. Because of the recent Tai Po fire, three polling stations have been relocated.

Voter turnout better than 2021 poll

Voter turnout in the geographical constituencies during Sunday’s election reached 31.9 percent, which surpassed the cumulative turnout rate in the 2021 Legislative Council election. Out of the total 4,131,298 electors, 1,317,682 cast their ballots.

In the functional constituencies, the turnout was 40.09 percent, with 76,942 out of a total 191,916 casting their votes.

And for the Election Committee constituency, 1,458 out of 1,466 voters – or 99.45 percent – cast their votes.

During the 2021 election, the rates of voter turnout for the geographical constituencies, functional constituencies, and the Election Committee constituency were 30.2 percent, 32.22 percent, and 98.48 percent, respectively.

Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu extended his congratulations to all newly-elected members of the Legislative Council on behalf of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government.

Saying the eighth LegCo general election has successfully concluded, he said, “I also thank the 161 candidates from different sectors, professions and backgrounds, as well as all sectors of the community, for their active participation.”

He said the smooth and successful conduct of the election at a time when the Hong Kong community is collectively facing a difficult period carries profound significance.

“It demonstrates electors' support for the government's commitment to recovery and reform following the tragedy, and for electing capable and committed LegCo members to drive institutional reform. It showcases the spirit of unity, mutual care and support among the people of Hong Kong.”

All 90 members of new-term LegCo elected

The results of the eighth-term Legislative Council election were unveiled early on Monday.

All 90 members of the new-term LegCo have been elected – 40 elected by the Election Committee, 30 by functional constituencies, and 20 by geographical constituencies through direct elections.

The eighth-term LegCo of the HKSAR will commence its four-year term on Jan 1 next year.

1.31 million geographical constituency voters cast ballot

Voter turnout rates in all three constituencies for the 2025 Legislative Council General Election have surpassed those of the 2021 election, with the total number of votes exceeding 1.39 million.

The geographical constituencies recorded a turnout rate of 31.9 percent, the functional constituencies 40.09 percent, and the Election Committee constituency 99.45 percent — each higher than the corresponding rates in 2021, which were 30.2 percent, 32.22 percent, and 98.48 percent, respectively.

The counting of votes in the 2025 Legislative Council General Election has started after voting concluded at 11:30 pm on Sunday.

All voting stations were turned into counting stations while the ballots in the functional and Election Committee constituencies were brought to the central counting station at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai.

Turnout exceeds 31%

With an hour to go before voting ends, the turnout in the geographical constituencies in the Legislative Council election had reached 31.43 percent, with 1,298,261 out of 4,131,298 registered voters having cast their votes as of 10:30 pm.

In the functional constituencies, 75,762 voters, or 39.48 percent of 191,916 registered electors, had finished voting.

Meanwhile, only ten out of 1,466 voters had yet to vote in the Election Committee constituency, which had a turnout rate of 99.32 percent.

Voter turnout surpasses 2021

The voter turnout in the geographical constituencies has reached 30.42 percent, surpassing the 30.20 percent recorded in the 2021 Legislative Council election.

As of 9:30 pm, 1,257,039 out of 4,131,298 registered voters, or 30.43 percent, have cast their ballots. In 2021, the turnout at 9:30 pm was 29.28 percent and only reached 30.20 percent at 10:30 pm.

In the functional constituencies, the turnout climbed to 38.09 percent as 73,110 out of 191,916 registered voters finished voting.

Meanwhile, 1,453 out of 1,466 votes, or 99.11 percent, were cast in the Election Committee constituency.

A total of more than 1.3 million votes have been cast so far from all constituencies.

The total number of votes cast in the 2025 Legislative Council General Election has reached more than 1.2 million.

As of 8:30 pm, 1,200,490 votes were cast in the geographical constituencies, or 29.06 percent of the 4,131,298 expected votes.

In the functional constituencies, 69,587 voters, or 36.26 percent of 191,916 registered voters, have cast their ballots.

Meanwhile, 1,448 out of 1,466 votes, or 98.77 percent, were cast in the Election Committee constituency.

As of 7:30 pm, 1,134,652 voters out of an electorate of 4,131,298, or 27.46 percent, have come out to vote in the geographical constituencies.

Turnout reached 34.39 percent in the functional consituencies as 66,003 of 191,916 voters have cast their ballots.

In the Election Committee constituency, only 20 voters out of 1,466 electors have yet to cast their votes as the turnout reached 98.64 percent.
