Hong Kong residents trekked to the territory’s many beaches on Sunday as the city recorded its hottest day since official meteorological records began in the city in 1884.

Driven by the outer subsiding airflow of Severe Typhoon Dolphin, temperatures rose to an all-time high of 36.9 degrees Celsius, the Hong Kong Observatory said. 

The maximum temperature recorded in Sheung Shui in the New Territories was 39.8 C, also the highest record in Hong Kong since the observatory's started installing automatic weather stations in the 1980s.

Forecasters expect sweltering conditions to persist before a southwesterly airstream brings coastal showers by midweek.
