
Forty out of the 90 lawmakers elected to the Hong Kong Legislative Council are fresh faces, according to the results unveiled on Monday.
Sunday's poll saw a turnout rate of 31.9 percent in direct election, higher than the previous edition in 2021.
The 90 lawmakers of the eighth-term Legislative Council comprise 40 returned by the Election Committee, 30 by functional constituencies, and 20 by geographical constituencies through direct elections. The new LegCo will commence its four-year term on Jan 1 next year.
Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu extended his congratulations to all newly elected members of the Legislative Council on behalf of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government.

He thanked all 161 candidates from different sectors, professions and backgrounds, as well as all sectors of the community, for their active participation, and said he hoped to advance reform with the new-term LegCo.
Lee said the smooth and successful conduct of the election demonstrated electors' support for the government's commitment to recovery and reform following the tragic fire in Tai Po, and for electing capable and committed LegCo members to drive institutional reform. It showcased the spirit of unity, mutual care and support among the people of Hong Kong.
Electoral Affairs Commission Chairman David Lok Kai-hong concluded the election and said that the overall process had been smooth, emphasizing that the new-term lawmakers shoulder heavy responsibilities. A report on the election will be submitted to the chief executive within three months.
The Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong (DAB) was the biggest winner in the election, securing 20 seats in the council. The Business and Professionals Alliance for Hong Kong and the Federation of Trade Unions (FTU) took eight and seven seats, respectively. Four of the 54 incumbents seeking re-election failed to retain their seats.

Christine Fong Kwok-shan won New Territories South East with 58,828 votes. Fong, who has failed to win a seat in five previous LegCo elections, said that the culmination of past efforts realized the miracle, and her success is attributable to the residents' trust.
The DAB’s Chris Ip Ngo-tung was the other winner in the constituency.
Bill Tang Ka-piu from FTU won Kowloon East with 53,675 votes. Cheung Pui-kong secured another seat in the district with 29,116 votes.
Paris Olympics gold medalist Vivian Kong Man-wai achieved absolute success in her debut, winning a functional constituency seat with 131 votes. Her opponent Ma Yat-chiu got 23 votes.
Kong said she would take this opportunity to tell the world about Hong Kong’s greatness.
