KATHMANDU - The Nepali government has set a new seven-day deadline for social media platforms to get registered, a minister announced on Wednesday.

"The cabinet has decided to call upon social media operators to register within seven days, in accordance with the Social Media Regulation Guideline 2080 and a Supreme Court order," Minister for Communication and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung said as he made public the decision.

Social media platforms failing to register with the ministry within the specified period will be gradually disabled from operation in Nepal, the minister added.

In late March, the Nepali government gave social media platforms 30 days to get registered or face the consequence of being banned, but several platforms refused to register.
