Chinese shares close higher Wednesday

BEIJING - Chinese stocks closed higher on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.86 percent to 3,403.95 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.64 percent higher at 10,354.22 points.

The combined turnover of these two indices stood at approximately 1.32 trillion yuan (about $183.59 billion), up from 1.29 trillion yuan on the previous trading day.

Shares in the shipping and chemical sectors led the gains, while those in the photovoltaics sector bucked the upward trend, experiencing significant losses.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, gained 1.01 percent to close at 2,083.14 points Wednesday.
