HK airport passenger volume up 23% in August

Hong Kong International Airport passenger traffic recorded another post-pandemic high in August with 4.92 million passengers, up 23 percent from the same period last year, the Airport Authority Hong Kong said on Monday.    

The airport recorded 31,605 flight movements, representing a 26.1 percent year-on-year increase, while cargo throughput rose 10.6 percent to 406,000, the AAHK said in a statement.

Daily passenger traffic exceeded 170,000 on peak days last month with the airport handling 174,600 passengers on Aug 18, it added.

All passenger segments, including Hong Kong residents and visitors and transfer or transit passengers, saw significant growth compared to the same month last year.

Traffic to and from Southeast Asia, the Chinese mainland, and Japan recorded the most significant monthly increases, the AAHK said.

It said cargo throughput continued its consecutive double-digit year-on-year growth in August with export traffic remaining the main growth driver, increasing by 14.6 percent compared to the same month last year.

Among key trading regions, cargo traffic to and from key trading regions in Europe, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East increased most significantly in August, the AAHK said.

For the first eight months of 2024, passenger volume increased to 34.9 million while flight movements rose to 237,435, recording a growth of 43.5 percent and 41.4 percent, respectively, compared to the same period of 2023.

Cargo traffic also recorded an annual increase of 16.5 percent to about 3.2 million tonnes, the AAHK added.

On a 12-month rolling basis, passenger volume rose significantly by 77.1 percent year-on-year to about 50.1 million, while flight movements went up by 56.0 percent to 345,615. Cargo throughput grew 15.9 percent to about 4.8 million tonnes.

Meanwhile, HKIA welcomed two new passenger airlines, Indonesia AirAsia and Thai Lion Air, which will start operating new routes connecting Indonesia and Thailand respectively in October.

Two new destinations for passengers, Koror in Palau and Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, will also be added in August and October respectively, to further expand HKIA’s extensive air network, the AAHK said.
