DPRK 'fires submarine-launched ballistic missile'

By Agencies

SEOUL - The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) has fired a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) in eastern waters, the Republic of Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said Saturday.

The latest launch came amid concerns that the country might conduct a nuclear test ahead of a key ruling party meeting.

A JCS official told Xinhua on the phone that the projectile, estimated to have been a missile launched from a DPRK submarine, was fired at about 6:30 pm local time (0930 GMT) in waters off the DPRK's South Hamgyong province.

The official declined to elaborate on whether the SLBM launch had succeeded, saying the military is closely monitoring the move of DPRK forces for further provocations.
