Japan teenager has Zika after Brazil visit

By Xinhua

TOKYO - A Japanese teenager infected Zika virus after his return from Brazil, becoming the first Zika case in the island country since the disease spread in Latin America from last year, according to the health ministry here on Thursday.

The young man stayed in Brazil from Feb 9 with his family for a trip and returned home Monday.

Local reports said he had a fever of about 38 degrees Celsius on Saturday, but thermographic inspection at a quarantine station in Japan failed to detect the abnormal body temperature.

An official of the health ministry told a press conference that the public need not to fear about the spread of the virus as mosquitoes are dormant in winter in Japan, Kyodo News reported.

Three people in Japan infected the Zika virus in 2013 and 2014 after their return from the French Polynesian island of Bora Bora and Thailand.

The World Health Organization declared a global public health emergency over the virus on Feb 1 since its widespread in the Latin America area.

Japan earlier has enhanced its efforts to prevent the virus from entering the country.
