Three killed in blast in S Philippines

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines, Oct 1 -- A bomb exploded in Isabela City, Basilan of southern Philippines Thursday, hitting a convoy of a local city official that initially left 3 people killed, according to police.

Police said undetermined others were also wounded and rushed to the hospital.

Police Superintendent Albert Larubis, Isabela City Police chief, said the improvised explosive device exploded about 1:10 pm along the street in front the house of Mayor Cherrylyn Santos- Akbar in Barangay Sunrise.

He said initial investigation disclosed that the bomb was believed to be planted in a tricycle cab parked along the street.

The police said bomb incidentally exploded while the convoy of Vice Mayor Abdulbaki Ajibon was passing and hit its back-up vehicle.

The police said among those killed were two escorts of Ajibon and the other was a bystander.

Larubis said no one claimed responsibility in the deadly bombing that destroyed the back-up vehicle  a pick-up type  of Ajibon and damaged to the concrete fence.
