Zhongshan in Guangdong province, already a manufacturing powerhouse, plans become an even bigger contributer to the nation’s development by leveraging its location in the heart of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the coming Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge to attract more high-end producers.
The development of Bay Area has brought brand new opportunities to Zhongshan, and the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge will bring the two cities even closer, said Xu Chengbin, director general of Zhongshan Economic and Information Technology Bureau. Now is the best time ever for the city to develop its world-class equipment manufacturing industry and to further improve the industrial chain.
Equipment manufacturing is the pillar industry of Zhongshan, with more than 3,200 such companies in the city, among which 837 are above designated size, Xu said.
Total output of equipment manufacturers with revenue above designated size reached 38.6 billion yuan ($5.6 billion) in 2017, an increase of 8.3 percent from a year earlier. For the first 10 months of 2018 the total output of the equipment manufacturers was 30.6 billion yuan.
Zhongshan has been focusing on improving its industrial policy and optimizing the development environment to attract high-end equipment manufacturers and personnel, Xu said.
From 2015 to 2017, Zhongshan’s government funded 1,500 equipment manufacturing projects with 370 million yuan. During the same period, it also received 1.5 billion yuan from Guangdong province to fund high-end manufacturing companies in Zhongshan.
To encourage its manufacturers, Zhongshan’s government will subsidize up to 30 percent of the total purchase value if a company buys a machine tool that is manufactured locally.
“Zhongshan sits in the heart of the Bay Area, the city is so suitable for manufacturers, the labor costs as well as the living costs are relatively low and the government services are great,” said Xu, adding that he hopes Zhongshan can help the country in developing the high-end equipment manufacturing industry, so its development will no longer be subject to other countries.
MinFound Medical Systems Co Ltd, a high-end equipment manufacturer attracted by Zhongshan, was able to get funding from the local government and the policy for them to build their plant is also very favourable, MinFound Vice-President Qian Hua said.
Established in 2011, MinFound Medical makes X-ray computed tomography and positron emission tomography equipment. The company’s headquarters are in Shaoxing, Zhejiang province, but it produces some of its major products in Zhongshan.
Qian said Zhongshan’s government treated the company very well. Aside from the services provided by the government, the company will also be rewarded if one of its projects becomes a national key project.
