HONG KONG - Hong Kong's Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor on Sunday said the government treasures and respects Hong Kong’s core values.

Lam said she clearly heard the views expressed in a peaceful and rational manner. This embodied the spirit of Hong Kong, as a civilized, free, open and pluralistic society, that values mutual respect, harmony and diversity, she added.

The HK special Administrative Region (SAR) government, in a statement issued on Sunday, said given the strongly-polarized opinions among the society, it has suspended the legislation of the amendments to the extradition law in the Legislative Council, in the hope of returning the society to harmony and avoiding injuries to anyone.
In the press statement, it stressed that there was no time frame set for restarting the legislation.

Lam also apologized to the public of Hong Kong. The government’s deficiencies in its work had led to substantial controversies and conflicts in the community and caused disappointment and grief among the people, Lam was quoted as saying in the press release.
Lam pledged to be humble and sincere in accepting the public’s criticisms and pledged to make improvements in serving the people of Hong Kong.
