HONG KONG - A charity run was held on Saturday to promote public awareness of the prevention of AIDS in Hong Kong.
At the starting ceremony of the AIDS Free Charity Trail Run organized by the Hong Kong AIDS Foundation, Chief Secretary Matthew Cheung said homosexual contact between men is currently the main route of HIV transmission in Hong Kong.
Of the 692 newly reported cases in 2016, 441, or 63.7 percent, were men to men, Cheung said, adding that the public should be concerned about the figure.
Cheung also pointed out an escalating trend of more young people getting infected in recent years.
He said the SAR government is fully committed to the prevention and control of AIDS infection.
"Since (the) 1980s when the first case was recorded in Hong Kong, we have been providing free, anonymous and confidential testing services. Anti-retrovirals are now provided to all those infected," Cheung said.
The AIDS Trust Fund is also in place to support various non-governmental organizations to provide supporting services to people living with AIDS, he added.
Cheung called for public support in building an inclusive and supportive environment for infected HIV residents in the city.
