Greater Bay Area conference held in Hong Kong

The 5th Greater Bay Area conference themed "Inclusive Growth through Innovation and Sustainability" was held at Hong Kong Ocean Park Marriott Hotel on Thursday.

Co-organized by China Daily and Silk Road Economic Development Research Center, the 5th Greater Bay Area Conference, previously known as Belt and Road Conference, was held examine how various sectors, including financial services, trading and logistics, and professional services, can work together to reap opportunities in the Greater Bay Area. It also examined the evolution of smart healthcare and the opportunities it opens up across the sector and other peripheral industries.

13:00 pm   Opportunities and challenges for Hong Kong 

The lunch dialogue, themed "Shenzhen as a Pilot Demonstration Area: Opportunities and Challenges for Hong Kong" was chaired by Professor Witman Hung, principal liaison officer for Hong Kong, Shenzhen Qianhai Authority, and the speaker was Guo Wanda, executive vice-president of China Development Institute.

The second panel is themed "Evolution of smart healthcare: Technology and connected data".

Chaired by Hong Fung, executive director and chief executive officer of CUHK Medical Centre, this panel brings together speakers from the insurance industry, healthcare services and beauty sector to talk about the evolution of smart healthcare including big data analysis, and the opportunities it opens up across the sector and other peripheral industries.

Panelists include Ricky Yin-to Chiu, founder and CEO of Phase Scientific; Chung-mau Lo, hospital chief executive of The University of Hong Kong -Shenzhen Hospital; Anthony Wu, standing committee member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference National Committee; and Gary Zhang, chairman of Oriental Patron and iCarbonX Health Care Investment and Business Committee.

The first panel is themed on "Cross-sector Business Collaboration in the Greater Bay Area". 

The panel is chaired Professor Edward Chen Kwan Yiu Edward, chairman of HKU School of Professional and Continuing Education, and the panelists include Fu Yuning, chairman of China Resources Group; Professor Shen Minghao, Dean of the Great Bay Area Institute (Guangdong, Hongkong, Macao); Pantazis Therianos, chief executive officer of Euroterra Capital; and Thomas S. T. So, chairman of Belt and Road Committee and Greater Bay Area Working Group, the Law Society of Hong Kong.

10:20 am    New government policy innovations

Keynote speaker Leung Chun-ying makes suggestions on new government policy innovations, including opening up the housing markets in all the Guangdong Bay Area cities to Hong Kong residents, further opening up the professional services market, and relaxing entry restrictions for qualified scientists to work in the Lok Ma Chau Loop.

10:16 am    Call for political resolve 

Leung Chun-ying, vice-chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, says political resolve is needed on both sides of the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong to get the policy changes done. The results would be very good news for Hong Kong.

10:02 am   Impetus for growth

"There were many examples in the past 41 years of reforms on the mainland where policy innovation provided the main impetus for synergy-driven growths in the entire Greater Bay Area. But that too was history. Now we need more," says Leung Chun-ying, vice-chairman of the CPPCC National Committee.
